The challenge

Subscription checkout is where good products lose people. The goal was to help a user compare plans, see exactly what they are paying for, and reach payment without that last-second hesitation that kills conversion.

Problem

When plan differences and total costs are unclear, users stall right before paying. Hidden add-ons and vague summaries make checkout feel like a risk rather than a decision.

Who it's for

  • New subscribers choosing a plan
  • Users upgrading or adding options
  • Billing and growth teams
  • Support teams handling refunds

Approach

Design a flow that makes the decision visible. Plans compare side by side, add-ons show their cost impact live, and a clear review step confirms exactly what the user is buying before payment.

Key features & screens

  • Side-by-side plan comparison
  • Transparent pricing breakdown
  • Add-on selection with live totals
  • Order review step
  • Confirmation and receipt states
  • Payment method clarity
  • Trust and security cues
  • Error and retry handling

System & UX decisions

  • Show the total cost before the payment step.
  • Make plan differences scannable, not buried.
  • Confirm the selection before charging.
  • Keep trust cues near the payment action.

Outcome

The flow improved decision clarity by making plan differences, costs, selected options, and next steps visible before payment.
